I'd be willing to bet good money that Depeche Mode is embarrassed by this lyric.

And how, precisely, would a rainbow set one free? Does it possess handcuff keys?

Yeah, I'm willing to bet they didn't really think through that line...Or maybe they know something about rainbows, bondage, and domination that the rest of us mortals aren't aware of!

It is a great song though!

I have always thought it was a reference to the rainbow that God sent as promise to Noah (and all of us) that he will not interfere in the path we chose after the great flood. (Genesis 9:11-13)
